Introduction
Professional
shoplifters have been practicing their trade throughout recorded history. More
recently, as the numbers of professional shoplifters has continued to increase
and as their actions have culminated in retailers sustaining greater losses,
retailers have focused additional attention on theft by organized groups. Many

continued to increase at an astounding rate, yet merchants were more concerned

Organized Retail
Theft (ORT) is a problem in the retail loss prevention industry. In spite of
spending increases to develop and deploy effective merchandise protection strategies
consumer theft continues to increase (Miller, 2005). The problem of ORT has negatively
impacted consumers who must pay higher retail prices to cover the increased spending
on loss prevention as well as the financial losses attributed to ORT. One possible
cause of this problem is that retail loss prevention leaders continue to employ
situational strategies that have not been evaluated for their effectiveness
(Glasscock et al. 1998)
Thus
the main problem that needs to be addressed in this research paper is the
organizational physical theft. Click here for more on this paper.......
2. Full Outline: Submit
an outline for the body of your paper.
The outline should include the aspects of the problem listed in your
purpose statement, and the subpoints you will use to explain these aspects of
the problem. Your main points should be
the items listed in your purpose statement.
It
has been observed that organizational physical theft is high in retail
organizations. They have been facing this issue since last 50 years. The Food
Marketing Institute (FMI) (2003) reports that professional shoplifters are divided
into three levels: low-level, mid-level, and top-level. Low-level shoplifters usually
work alone or with one or two accomplices. Low-level shoplifters usually sell their
stolen merchandise for 20 to 30% of its retail value generating $200 to $300
for the shoplifter. Click here for more on this paper.......
Mid-level
shoplifting rings may include from five to twenty-five or more professional
shoplifters who are recruited, trained, and supervised by street fences (Food Marketing
Institute, 2003). Shoplifting at the mid-level can produce an annual income in excess
of $100,000 for members of organized rings. According to the FMI (2003)
top-level ORT operations are divided into two types of illegal enterprises:
repackaging operations and illegitimate wholesalers. Illegal repackaging
operations are usually located in major metropolitan areas and usually operate
as wholesale distributors. Click here for more on this paper.......
Repackaging
operators purchase stolen property from various illegal sources. When the
stolen merchandise arrives, it is sorted by product, cleaned, shrink-wrapped,
and boxed to make the products appear as if they were purchased from a
manufacturer. The sophisticated repackagers often have the ability to duplicate
manufacturer logos and UPCs designed to create the illusion that the products
are legitimate. The goods are then sold to an illegitimate wholesaler (FMI,
2003). Click here for more on this paper.......
The
current trend in the retail industry is to make stores larger. As stores are becoming
larger with a greater assortment of merchandise with higher price points, and as
the physical size of the store increases, the natural tendency is to add more
entry and exit points to handle the increased traffic. The increase in entry
and exit points provides multiple escape routes for would-be shoplifters. One
can reasonably infer that initiatives to improve customer service and increase
sales are the primary drivers of ORT. The professional thief looks for
merchandise that is accessible, expensive, retains its value, and can be
quickly converted to cash. Click here for more on this paper.......
The
retail industry spends millions of dollars annually for personnel and equipment
designed to detect, deter, and prevent shoplifting (Babin & Babin, 1996).
Strategies such as electronic article surveillance, secure product packaging,
lock-up strategies, source tagging, door checkers, security personnel, and
close circuit television are currently in use. Despite financial expenditures
and the rigorous use of preventative strategies, theft attributed to
shoplifting continues to increase.
3. Preliminary Recommendations: Submit a list of 3 -5 preliminary
recommendations you MAY offer to “solve” the issue. (See page 313.)
It
is important for the organizations to use different tools and equipment with
which they can minimize the organizational physical theft which include SSTV
cameras, security personnel and electronic article surveillance. Click here for more on this paper.......
According
to Rogers (2003) CCTV, GPS, access control, refund fraud, and supply chain are
areas in loss prevention that are being influenced by emerging technologies. The
areas most likely to affect merchandise theft are CCTV, access control, and to
a limited degree GPS. Rogers pointed out the analysis of the state of current
and emerging loss prevention strategies suggest that continuous growth is
needed to meet the challenges of their expanding responsibilities.
Recognizing the
need for additional efforts to capitalize on emerging technologies is the first
step toward developing strategies capable of reducing ORT. Modification of the current
strategies being used, such as enhancing EAS with RFID and RFA or increasing the
functionality of CCTV systems, will augment the systems deterrent value. Additionally,
a new approach that takes advantage of the revolution in technology and combines
SCP and CPTED may provide the greatest opportunity for deterring ORT. Click here for more on this paper.......
