This weekend I had the opportunity to recall my favorite childhood hobby,
cheerleading. My niece who is in middle
school asked me to assist her in getting ready for her New Mexico Athletic
Association cheerleading competition. I combed her hair and did her make up,
and as I was going through the motions, many flashbacks surfaced, because it
felt like not very long ago I was preparing for the same competition. I was a cheerleader from elementary to high
school; I not only loved the sport and but I loved the competition and being
part of a team. My biggest influence and whom I admired when I was in
elementary would be my cousin, at the time she was a high school cheerleader. I
loved watching her practice at home in the evenings or on the weekends, she had
so much passion for it, that she made it look easy. My cousin took the time to
teach me the basics and taught meto have fun while doing something I had the passion
for.
Soon after I graduated high
school, when I was in my early twenties, I became the cheerleading coach for
the same high school that I cheered for. I absolutely loved it; once again I
was reconnecting with my hobby and enjoyed teaching the girls what I had
learned. Many had the same passion as I did and it showed because when we competed
in the state high school cheerleading competition, our team took 2nd
place. As a past cheerleader and coach it was an honor to have accomplished
such a huge goal, because it had never been done before.
Since, I moved from my hometown
15 years ago I haven’t reconnected with my hobby until this past weekend. And
after attending my nieces competition and helping her get ready, I remembered
how much I loved that sport .I have made a promise to myself from here on out
until my niece is no longer a cheerleader – I will be her biggest fan and I will
attend as many performances as I can, because I remember how excited and
important I felt to have my family support me.
