"Reform and Counter-Reform;
Mannerism" Please respond to the following:
- Chapter 17 introduces us to the Protestant Reformation
of the 1500s CE / AD.
- Luther was excommunicated from the Catholic Church for
his outcry against the church’s practices. Martin Luther wrote, “I
would never have thought that such a storm would rise from Rome over one
simple scrap of paper.."
- Explain whether you think Luther was justified in his
accusations, and state the reasons for your position.
- Chapter 20 takes us to the period of the mid-to-late
1500s CE / AD, the age of the Counter-Reformation, also known as the
Catholic Reformation. It is also the period of that late Renaissance
painting style called Mannerist. Explore the give and take of an
Inquisition trial of the artist Veronese (pp. 666-667). Finally, in
Veronese's encounter with the Inquisition court, there are issues of
artistic freedom, the rights of the patron who paid the artist, and issues
of appropriateness.
- Inquisition trial of the artist Veronese: Chap. 20 (pp. 666-7 with fig. 20.15) and
at http://members.efn.org/~acd/Veronese.html
- Do you agree with the Inquisitor’s interrogation of
Veronese about his painting, originally titled Last Supper? Or, do
you side with Veronese? Explain your response.
