Technical
proposal
Background and audience:
it is important in any organization that you propose ideas which are accepted
and implemented. The ability to analyze a problem, to develop an effective
solution, to communicate underlying ideas and purposes, and to have this
proposal turned into successful action can be useful to your professional
success .
Topic: Consider an area in your major and propose a
new or modified process OR the development, modification, or improvement of a
product, service or idea.
Format
To make this somewhat reflect the realities of an
organizational proposal, you must produce the following in this order:
1
Transmittal page, in memo or letter
format, addressed to someone. There should be text ranging from a couple of
sentences to a couple of paragraphs giving a brief overview of what's in the
attached materials. This will be on the top of the proposal and will be placed
on someone's desk for future review.

Executive Summary which should be able to be read by
itself to give an overview of the proposal. It's after reading this that a reader will make the decision
whether to continue. It should be somewhere around 1 page to as much as 1 and
half pages. Note: you write this after you have written the core proposal. Click here for more on this paper.......

The core proposal must have appropriate minor graphics
including headings and sub-heads; it is ideally developed in the following
sections:
a-
Problem
statement which deals with the issue of why you have decided to write on this
subject. What things are there that justify doing this proposal?
b-
Options/solution: There are two basic ways to do this: 1- consider all
reasonable alternatives to a problem, with three being a typical number. 2- if
there aren't multiple possibilities, then make this a solution section.
c-
Recommendation that you think makes the most sense after sifting through all the possibilities.
Argue for your case at this point rather than presenting the recommendations. If
you have a solution section , then you wouldn't do this section.
a- The pre-proposal which is somewhere between ½and
2 pages. This explains the basic proposal ideas and the options you are
considering. Include the original ( from our " approval" meeting) or
revised document- indicating that it has been revised.
b- Cite any outside sources, annotated as needed
c- A glossary if useful
d- Any other useful support information.
As with any research, the proposal is to be your own
writing, even if it borrows ideas from another source such as the senior
project. Click here for more on this paper.......
Technical Article
Background and audience:
There are many people interested in knowing more about
technical subjects, such as those who read Discovery or Smithsonian;
organizational decision makers interested in an issue impacting their company;
and individuals searching for information about a medical or technical topic. Click here for more on this paper.......
Topic:
You should provide a sophisticated overview of a subject to
an intelligent reader as described above. For example, in the world of
computing, you could explain the highly competitive world of chip design and
manufacturing; how new software is aiding productivity in an area; the
utilization of computing in specialized fields such as medical, art, or retail;
or the challenges of computer security.
Following are topics developed by previous students; I’ll be
glad to help you identify a topic. Click here for more on this paper.......
- The
functioning of a body part, e.g., the heart, kidney, etc.
- Medical
procedures such as gastric bypass
- An overview
of the structural “health” of bridges in Pennsylvania
- The history
of a technology, e.g., the evolution of computer chips
- Data mining
and its impact
- The
development of automated financial trading systems
Requirements:
1. Use
at least two authoritative references to give credibility to your information
2. Have
both major and minor graphics (including headings and subheadings)
3. Provide
an introduction, background or history to the topic
4. Develop
a paper of appropriate length for the topic; it could be as little as somewhere
around 4-5 pages (double-spaced equivalent, though you can choose either single
or double spacing) including graphics, but some people may want to develop
longer papers. Longer doesn’t automatically equate to better. Click here for more on this paper.......
