1. Do you agree with the suggestion that research with minority groups should consider the cultural context of the population? Why? Research conducted among minority groups should consider the cultural context of the population. According to J.V. Diller the United States Census projections for the next forty years estimate that racial minorities will be the majority in the United States (Diller, 2011, p.9). In many situations such as educational facilities and jobs, there has been a sense of “cultural blindness.” The ideology of culture-blindness or “ignoring the cultural differences “within our Nation prevents researchers and counselors from being able to examine issues within today’s diversified society (Arzubiaga, 2008, p.311). Without considering the cultural context of a client’s background, one could provide the wrong direction or even offend a client without awareness. In accordance with Angela Arzubiaga, as the United States and world continues to culturally grow, it is important for researchers and counselors to cease the idea of minorities as special cases and instead adopt a culturally competent ideal.More on This Topic......
2. What value might the “sociohistorical view of culture” offer counselors in working with diverse clients?
Understanding the sociohistorical view of culture is vitally important when working with diverse clients. By analyzing a client’s cultural history counselors are able to grasp the client’s thought processes, cultural practices, and beliefs. The role of the counselor is to offer support and guidance, in order to appropriately fulfill these characteristics, it is important to understand the client’s cultural background. In addition, the sociohistorical view allows counselors to continue the traditional empathetic role of counselor but it “compels them to be attentive to within-group diversity and to an individual’s construction of identities across contexts and time.” (Arzubiaga, 2008, p.313)More on This Topic......
3. Should counselors consider the role of “ecological validity” in working with diverse clients? When working with diverse clients it is vital for counselors to consider the role of ecological validity. Attentiveness to ecological validity helps researchers and counselors understand “research as situated cultural practice.”(Arzubiaga, 2008, p. 319) For example, in the research case study featured in Arzubiaga, researchers examined family literacy practices at home and within the community. Initially researchers assumed that the study would should students in their at home environments focusing on literacy, instead it showed students staging literacy practices. Considering the role of ecological validity would have benefited the researcher’s results and generalization of literacy practices. Arzubiaga noted that considering the role of ecological validity can be demanding and time consuming when conducting a study. However, as Christian counselors and researchers we must practice and adhere to the power of truth, “truth can be found through scientific investigation and interpretation,” in order to effectively to serve our diverse clients (Power of Truth, 2014).
