Women are more likely to take on typically male occupations because when a woman does so, it is seen as admirable and it earns her respect. Being able to be sucessful in a man's world is seen as a step up for a woman.

#1- Women are more likely to take on typically male occupations because when a woman does so, it is seen as admirable and it earns her respect. Being able to be sucessful in a man's world is seen as a step up for a woman. On the other hand, for a man to topersue an occupation tradionally seen as a female role, it is seen as step down. People expect a man to be a doctor, not a nurse. (I know, it's an unfair expectation, but I am totally guilty it myself.) When it comes to careers, our society expects more from men than women becuase they are supposed to be the bread winners. When I woman takes on that role, it is above and  beyond expectations, so she achieves higher social status.
I do believe that there are both cultural and structural barriers when it comes to men seeking work traditionally seen as feminine. From a young age, we are indoctrinated by television when we see specific occupations portrayed by men and others by women. There is a lot of pressure for men to portray themselves is a strong light, and there is a stigma that by doing womens work they are somehow weaker.
#2- Class doesn't have as much bearing on the way I think about gender as culture does. I suppose the stereotype that comes to mind regarding class is the one that wealthy women don't work or don't need to. Men are expected to work regardless class. I maintain that culture defines gender expectations more than class does.

1.   Why are woman more likely to work in traditionally male occupations than men are to work in traditionally female occupations? Are the barriers that prevent men from doing “woman work” cultural, structural, or both? Explain.
In the past women chose occupations that were suited for them such as secretary, nurse, or homemakers. Women never surpassed men in education especially in areas of mathematics or science, which are the pipelines to higher paying jobs. Therefore, the lack of women in higher paying jobs might be partially due to the fact that they did not pursue science and mathematics in school. However, in the past 40 years women have outpaced men in higher education in all areas. Women now are competitive and want the same jobs as well as the same pay rate as men.The reason men use to be in higher positions than women was because of lack of education, however, women now have realized that and are trying to be educated much more than men.Women now work in many areas where a long time ago, men dominated those jobs. Women now have many of those jobs and rise in their position just as well as men, and they are equal, as well as benefit from higher income.
Men tend not to work in traditionally female occupations, since it’s considered un-masculine. Male working in female occupation, I believe culturally unacceptable for many people. In my own family, my nephew wanted to be a nurse however his mother (my sister) absolutely went crazy. Her concern was that people would laugh and make fun of him. She wanted her son to go all the way and become a doctor but never a nurse. And that is an example of culture playing a major role in my nephew’s decision in his future.
.2 Does Class Position influence how we think about gender? Explain.

Of course the class position does influence how we think about gender. Classification between men and women would not be a big deal if equality existed among both men and women in their occupation in workforce. I don’t think there would be any kind of discrimination in wage gap, race, age, and other characteristics between male and female.
