So, what do
you want to do with your life? J
For
this assignment you are going to have an opportunity to explore what you
consider (today!) to be your “ideal job.” The goal is to see when you are
done if it is something you still consider “ideal” or might there be another
path for you to consider. You are in the gathering information stage of your
college life (a great place to be!). You get to explore, consider, reflect and
most importantly, keep your options open!
So,
for this assignment, please compose a 2-3 page, typed essay in which you
discuss the following:
Ø
You
might want to include in your
introduction your family’s career choices or circumstances that influenced
you to be attracted at this point to
a particular career field.
Ø You will need to provide a description of the job. This
description needs to be more detailed than “a businessperson.” State what kind
of business; what type of company; what types of things you would be
responsible for; etc.
Ø You will need to provide a description of a major course of
study(ies) that would either help you get this job or that would be
necessary for this job. Again, be specific; don’t state that you need to major
in business administration. Explain what you will learn by completing this
major (and/or why you will need to learn this information). Also, consider
whether you will need graduate study. If so, explain what type and how you can
increase your chances of being accepted to graduate school.
Ø You will need to provide a description (not a list) of at least three general education courses
you can take that are related to your field. Explain how these courses are
related to your field.
Ø You will need to provide a description of at least one activity (such
as volunteer work, survival job, etc.) not
related to school coursework that could help you to get your ideal job.
Ø You will also want to consider how the interests, values, skills,
and personality traits that you possess will fit this job.
Ø Your
conclusion should
sum up what you have learned from your job research and what you plan to do
with this information. For instance, you might find that you are now even more
interested in your career field; you might discover that you want to change
your mind; or you might discover that you need to complete more research.
Logistics:
Ø Please
format your essay according to MLA guidelines
(double-spaced, with 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Your last name and page
number should be at the ½-inch top margin. Top, bottom, and side margins should
also be 1-inch.
Ø Include a
Works Cited page (MLA style)
Ø contain at least two outside sources (the CSUN Catalog
and/or CSUN web site can count as one of
your required sources) with documented in-text citations
Ø contain an introduction, a body,
and a conclusion.
Ø be 2-3 pages in length
Hints for success:
Use your
class notes; use information you obtained, or can obtain, from the CSUN Career
Center; contact an academic advisor; use the CSUN Oviatt Library; interview
family members, friends, or professionals in the career field you are
interested in; read an interview with a person in your career field; read
course descriptions in the CSUN catalog.
